Earlier this week, Nobel Laureate Dr. Luc Montagnier, the man credited for the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), addressed a packed lecture hall at the University of Calgary. Dr. Montagnier’s lecture covered the scientific history of HIV beginning from the 1981 milestone when he first identified the virus.
In an absorbing lecture delivered to a rapt audience, Dr. Montagnier gave a thorough description of how HIV works in the body. He went on to detail how scientists are currently using this information in their ongoing search for a vaccine. To date, unfortunately, every promising vaccine has failed. Dr. Montagnier still has hope, however, and maintains his position that a therapeutic vaccine could be available within the next 5 years.
A therapeutic vaccine is designed for people already living with HIV. As Dr. Montagnier explained, a therapeutic vaccine would boost the immune system to the point where viral load could be maintained at the same levels found when a person is on HAART.
Although Dr. Montagnier still preaches prevention as the best defense against HIV, his work on a therapeutic vaccine is very exciting and offers hope for the current generation of people living with HIV both in Canada and around the globe.

Everyone, Everywhere, Everyday is a campaign to raise funds for prevention and education activities, enhancing the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS, and addressing stigma and discrimination in the community.
