The 2009 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is almost upon us. For those of you familiar with the agency, you already know that the walk is our biggest fundraiser. You also know that the money raised through the walk goes to our vital support, prevention and education programs.
But in addition to raising those much needed dollars, the walk is also a valuable opportunity to raise awareness in our community. For one Sunday in September, every year, anywhere from 500 – 1000 people gather in Eau Claire Plaza and make a public statement about HIV/AIDS.
They may be walking as friends, family or coworkers. They may be walking in support of someone who is living with HIV. They may be walking in memory of a loved one. They may be walking just because.
Whether they raised 50 dollars, 5,000 dollars or no dollars, our walkers are making a contribution. They are standing up and grabbing Calgary’s eyes and ears to say: HIV is here. HIV is here in our community. And we can do something about it.
Walk to raise money for support services. Walk to educate your friends and family about how to prevent HIV. Walk to end stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV in our community. Whatever your reason, just Walk.
Join us on Sunday, September 20th at the 2009 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life. Rain or shine, the walk begins at 12:00pm. Visit www.aidscalgary.org to learn more and get registered.
